Should I Wait and See?

The "wait and see" approach is often suggested when addressing concerns about childhood development. For instance, if you mention that your child isn't speaking yet, friends or well-meaning medical providers might advise, "Just wait and see; they'll catch up." While this advice is well-intentioned, it may delay access to valuable resources and information.

Children develop skills at different rates, which is why professionals often use average benchmarks. However, if you have concerns about your child's development, such as their speech and language skills, consulting a specialist can provide valuable insights.

Delaying evaluation may result in missed opportunities for Early Intervention Services, which are available for children ages birth to five and private services. Therapists can offer strategies for home implementation and potentially reduce the need for extensive therapy later.

If you have developmental concerns and are advised to "wait and see," consider initiating an evaluation with a specialist to receive tailored recommendations and support.
